A 2010 federal broadband award funded the regional middle-mile fiber network that became the backbone of Vast Networks’ carrier-grade infrastructure.
The Broadband Technology Opportunities Program (BTOP) project, awarded in 2010, funded the development of a regional fiber-optic middle-mile network serving 18 California counties. This transformative initiative established the foundation of what is now Vast Networks’ carrier-grade fiber infrastructure.
The network connected rural communities, educational institutions, public safety agencies, and broadband providers while enabling long-term broadband expansion throughout California’s Central Valley and surrounding regions. As rural broadband infrastructure, it gave local providers the high-capacity transport they needed to bring service to communities the major carriers had passed by.
